The Ref runs on a heavily customized language model that instantly cross-references claims made in the video with trusted, static databases (like sports almanacs, historical records, and census data). If your buddy claims Patrick Mahomes threw 60 touchdowns last year, The Ref knows he's lying instantly.
Volume doesn't win arguments here. The system actively tracks who is talking. If someone constantly interrupts or resorts to yelling, The Ref heavily penalizes their "Persuasion" and "Logic" scores. If they resort to name-calling, it's flagged as an Ad Hominem attack and they basically auto-lose.
100%. Just tap "Create Private Arena" and drop the link in your iMessage or WhatsApp group. Only people with the link can join or spectate. Private matches don't affect your public Elo rating, but you still get the final verdict card to post in the chat.
No. We stripped all the moralizing out of the engine. The Ref does not care what your political stance is. It only cares about formal logic. If you argue a conservative point using flawless logic, you win. If you argue a liberal point using flawless logic, you win. Logic is the only metric.
Free accounts are capped at 3 minutes. Pro accounts can set 5-minute timers. We keep them short intentionally. It forces you to get to the point, prevents rambling, and keeps the energy high.
If your opponent force-closes the app, disconnects intentionally, or walks away from the camera for more than 15 seconds, they automatically forfeit. You get the win, they get a coward penalty on their profile.
Yes. Pro users get a highly polished, ESPN-style vertical video export. It includes your face, their face, and the exact moment The Ref caught them in a lie or awarded you the win. Perfect for your Instagram story.
It's the same ranking system used in chess and competitive video games. Everyone starts at 1200. If you beat someone with a higher score than you, your score goes up a lot. If you lose to someone worse than you, your score tanks. It's the ultimate measure of your debate skill.
Absolutely. You can scroll through the Live Arena like Twitch or TikTok and watch public matchmaking debates. You can even react in the live chat while the argument is happening.
Anything. We have three arenas: Sports, Politics, and "The Bar" (the ridiculous stuff you argue about after three beers). When you create a private room, you can type in literally any topic you want, from "Who is the best Batman?" to "Does pineapple belong on pizza?"
No. This is the Arena. If you don't want to hear what they have to say, don't join the match. There is no safe space button here.
You need a stable 4G/5G or WiFi connection. Our video streaming protocol is highly optimized (we use WebRTC just like FaceTime), but if your connection drops completely for more than 15 seconds, you forfeit.
The Ref is right 99.8% of the time. But just like a real referee in the NFL, occasionally a call is questionable. Part of the game is playing to the whistle. The Ref's decision is final and cannot be appealed.
If your opponent says "You only think that because you're an idiot," that's an Ad Hominem. If they misrepresent your argument to make it easier to attack, that's a Strawman. The Ref catches these textbook definitions live and penalizes the user's logic score.
If you are in a Public Ranked match, the match is broadcast to spectators and a replay is saved to the Hall of Fame. If you are in a Private Match with your buddies, the video is end-to-end encrypted, only streamed live, and instantly deleted when the timer ends.
You can use an alias handle (e.g., @LakersFan99), but your camera must be on. This is a face-to-face platform. If you cover your camera or point it at the ceiling, The Ref will end the match and issue a forfeit.
The Ref calculates a final score out of 100 based on three weights: Factual Accuracy (40%), Logical Consistency (40%), and Persuasion/Rhetoric (20%). Penalties are subtracted from the final score. Highest score wins.
Currently, Debate TV is exclusively available on iOS (iPhone). Android development is on the roadmap for late 2026.
The Ref hates ties. It will split hairs on rhetorical delivery to pick a winner. However, in the rare event of a mathematical dead heat (less than 1% of matches), it is declared a Draw and neither user loses Elo.
